Shop Local, Donate Local, Support Local
Why We Support Local Organizations
Those big red or blue clothing donation boxes are seemingly everywhere, scattered throughout church parking lots, at the mall, by the gas station, pretty much anywhere you can park a car, you’ll see them. But not all those boxes are equal, and there’s a good reason to be choosy about which box you heave your bag of unwanted clothing into.
Donation boxes are always labeled with the name of the organization that sponsors them. Some are affiliated with a local organization, but others are sponsored by a textile recycler. With those, many donated items are exported overseas for fabric recycling, not clothing re-use, and that treasured sweater hand-knit by grandma isn’t going to be worn by a new toddler in your hometown. Instead, textile salvage may be recycled for industrial use and turned into rags or carpet pads.
We’ve talked before about what else you can do to recycle or donate clothing items on our blog, and textile recycling is always better than sending fabrics to the landfill, but we choose to donate items to locally-run nonprofit organizations rather than one of the big national organizations (who shall remain nameless).
Donating to a local organization ensures your donation benefits your community. Their programs help people in your town, rather than hundreds or thousands of miles away. Local organizations promote the betterment of our communities and provide crucial assistance to our friends and neighbors who need it most. We are always looking for new nonprofit partners to support and ways to build partnerships, but if you’re looking for a place to drop off your unwanted clothing or household items, here’s where we suggest you start.
- ReShop for the Good - Based in Ballston Spa, the ReShop supports the programs of Rebuilding Together Saratoga County (RTSC), which provides essential home repairs for neighbors in need. RTSC’s mission is to ensure that families in Saratoga, Warren, and Washington Counties can live independently in homes that are warm, safe, and dry.
- Habitat for Humanity ReStores - With several locations locally, ReStores support the work of Habitat for Humanity within the region. Sales from donated items help Habitat for Humanity partner with local families to build, rehabilitate, and repair safe and affordable homes in our community.
- CAPTAIN’S Treasures - Located in Clifton Park, CAPTAIN’s Treasures supports kids, families, and seniors in our community through CAPTAIN Community Human Services' 30+ programs and services. All of the proceeds from CAPTAIN’s Treasures stay within the local community, helping over 7,000 people every year.
- City Mission - With red clothing donation boxes throughout the area, and a store in Glenville, the City Mission provides free clothing to individuals in shelters, school clothing rooms, and winter coat distribution. They also provide professional clothing items as part of their job training programs, and meet basic needs for individuals throughout the region.
- Gateway House Thrift Shop - Located in the north end of Ballston Spa, the thrift shop proceeds support the end-of-life care offered at Gateway House of Peace.
There are many other local options, so instead of dropping your items off at The-Store-That-Shall-Not-Be-Named, please check out one of the stores and donation drop-off sites above, or another local organization. Sustainable Saratoga offers a good list of options throughout the area.
We hope you shop local, donate local, and support local. We always do!
